Is AED 10,000 a month enough in Dubai?

Example budgets for a single person, a couple and a family of four, built from current rents, school fees and living costs.

Short answer

For one person, yes. In a studio or shared flat in a budget area, AED 10,000 a month covers the basics, money sent home and still leaves about a quarter to save. For a couple it is tight, with little left over. For a family of four on one income it is hard, mainly because of rent and school fees.

What these budgets assume

  • AED 10,000 is take-home pay. The UAE has no personal income tax, so the salary you agree is close to what reaches your account.
  • Your employer covers your own health insurance, as Dubai law requires. Insurance for a spouse or children is usually the sponsor's cost, so it appears as a set-aside.
  • Rent is paid in cheques but saved monthly. Each budget shows a twelfth of the annual rent. Use the rent cheque calculator to plan your own.
  • Every number is an estimate built from the sources at the bottom of this page, checked in October 2026. Your area, lifestyle and contract will change them.

Why rent decides almost everything

Rent is the biggest line in every budget above, and it varies more by area than by anything else. Registered Dubai contracts over the past year put the typical studio at about AED 41,000 to 44,000 a year and a one-bedroom at about AED 57,000 to 68,000, while studios in International City can be found for about AED 28,000 to 30,000. Choosing a budget area can free up more than AED 1,000 a month on its own.

Sharing is cheaper still. Bed spaces and partitioned rooms are often listed between AED 500 and 2,500 a month, but make sure any shared room is a legal, registered let before you pay a deposit.

Why a family needs more than one salary

School fees are what change the picture for families. Even well-rated schools at the lower end of the market charge about AED 11,000 to 16,000 a year per child, and most charge far more. Two children at a lower-fee school add more than AED 2,300 a month before transport, books and uniforms. Together with a two-bedroom flat, that pushes a family's costs well past AED 10,000.

How to make AED 10,000 go further

  • Save for rent every month, not when the cheque is due. A twelfth of the annual rent each month means no cheque ever takes you by surprise.
  • Treat money sent home as a fixed bill, paid on salary day, not whatever is left at the end of the month.
  • Cook most meals. Groceries for one person usually cost about AED 800 to 1,500 a month; delivery apps can match that on their own.
  • Know your end-of-service gratuity. It is part of your savings. Work it out with the gratuity calculator.
  • Track one month of spending. The budget planner sorts a pasted bank statement into categories so you can see where the money actually went.

Frequently asked questions

Is AED 10,000 a good salary in Dubai?

For a single person it is a workable salary that leaves room to save, especially in a budget area or shared flat. For a couple it is tight, and for a family of four on one income it usually does not cover rent and school fees.

How much rent can I afford on AED 10,000?

A common guide is to keep rent to about a quarter to a third of take-home pay, which is roughly AED 2,500 to 3,300 a month, or AED 30,000 to 40,000 a year. That fits a studio or a one-bedroom in budget areas.

Is salary taxed in the UAE?

There is no personal income tax on salaries in the UAE, so a salary of AED 10,000 is close to what you take home.
